Diwali and Guy Fawkes Night 2010: more bang for your buck

This year, for the first time since 1972, Guy Fawkes Night and Diwali, the Festival of Lights observed by British Hindus and Sikhs, fall on the same day.

While both are traditionally hailed with fireworks, that’s where the similarities end. The former marks the foiling of a plot to blow up parliament in 1605 and the subsequent grisly executions of Mr Fawkes and friends; the latter remembers the celebrations that took place when King Rama returned from exile to Northern India in the 15th century BC.

So whether you’re in the mood for a joyous religious celebration or a good old bit of effigy burning, we’ve pretty much got all bases covered!
